10 steps to make a short film

In making short films is not difficult and expensive. Making a simple short film only requires cassette costs and research costs. But the most powerful thing before making a short film must have a story idea that can later develop and be sustainable. We must determine the focus of the story of our film. For example at a birthday party. So, the focus of the story is a birthday party. Or when going to an entertainment place, the focus of the story is the entertainment place, for example, A Day in the World of Fantasy / fantasy After we determine the focus of the story just follow these steps

Initial Research

Let’s find out first about the background that we want to film. If it’s serious, this research should be very detailed, but if you want it simple, we can just browse the internet first or ask friends or people who have experienced it. We note the data we got earlier as reference material.

Prepare the equipment

The equipment needed is any camcorders or video cameras with batteries and chargers. Don’t forget to bring additional microphones and extension cables, tripods and, most importantly, blank tapes

Field Research

When we arrive at our destination, we must do more research than the initial research we have done at home. Match the data obtained during initial research with the situation in the field. How: can walk, chat, and hang out! Relax and try to be familiar with the environment that we will film.

Create a rough story line

Decide who you want to be appointed as a character in the film. Usually, from the results of research in the field, we can get a more specific and interesting idea to be lifted from our initial ideas at home. For example, “Daily life of a clown in Dufan”. Then, make a rough story line from the idea. For example, the tasks of the clown in Dufan and the places that must be visited by the clown.

Make a Synopsis

Short story about what kind of film we make. From the synopsis we can determine who we should interview, the list of questions for each interview, and the list of pictures (footage) needed outside of the interview.

Filming or Shooting

From the results of research, we already know where and whenever the people we want to interview are. There are several things that must be considered for shooting.

First, go and ask for their permission to do the interview. Remember, never record an interview without permission! Unethical and can make them dislike.

Second, don’t forget to use additional microphones when conducting interviews, especially if you are in a crowd.

Third, use the list of questions that have been made previously as a reference, but do not be too rigid, we may ask other things outside the list.
Fourth, make the interview atmosphere as relaxed as possible, ask questions like we are chatting normally. Because, the existence of a video camera can make people nervous, jaim, and can not answer honestly.

Fifth, use a tripod if the interview lasts long enough and is not done while moving. Sixth, Complete all interviews from the list of people we have made. After that, record all the images that we wrote in our footage list. If we still have time and spare backup, we can really record additional images that might later be useful during the editing stage.
Seventh, after all is finished recording. Check all the lists that we have. Read again our initial synopsis. Are all enough. Do not let anyone forget.

Create the Final Story Line

Adjust the results of the notes with the results of the interview that we have made. Still suitable? Must it be changed? Which direction should be developed? This is very possible because the results of the interview can really produce more data and may be different from what we have prepared before. No problem. Fix and create a new synopsis that can be compiled from recordings that we have watched repeatedly.
After it’s finished, then this final synopsis can be a guide to start editing.

Editing Film

Start capturing the recordings that we have chosen before into the computer using the editing program that we usually use. After that, arrange our film based on the final synopsis that we have made before. Enter the footage that we have recorded. Make the groove as interesting as possible, don’t interview too many which can be boring. Ideally, the film should be 8-12 minutes long.

Background Music or Soundtrack

Add appropriate background music, don’t use random music! As much as possible make your own music or ask friends who are good at making music to make music for this film.

Finally, color correction or “color correction”

Enter the opening title (choose a catchy title that can describe the whole film), add credit titles, sound mixing, wrap! Make the DVD so you can watch it rollicking.
